The Main Character

The main character of our film opening project is named Betty, and is played by fellow group member, Tori Ragin.

Betty can be described physically, as a black, 17 year old girl, of a bit taller-than-average height, and as having long dark hair. Betty's appearance always ultimately depended on who we casted as the character as we were not able to pick and choose all of our actors, given our limited resources and time. But that was not a problem of course as we were never going to be picky about who played Betty in the first place. Betty has also just gone through a break up because her now ex-boyfriend, James, cheated on her with another girl, August.

In the very beginning of the film opening, when we see Betty waking up and getting out of bed, she is wearing her pajamas and then when she gets up and changes she's wearing a pair of blue jeans and a long-sleeve pink top. Betty isn't supposed to be too bold so I think even this simple, cute outfit was a good choice for the character.

The props associated with Betty include a teddy bear James gave to her (which is now in the trash), a love letter from him, and ripped up pictures of the two of them, representing her memories of James. The placements of these different props in the film opening indicate that Betty wants nothing to do with James, completely distraught over this whole betrayal, ready to start anew.

Betty's personality is more or less that of a shy person, but she is also intelligent, very neat, level-headed and strong. So even though Betty is still heartbroken over the fact that she was cheated on by someone who she loved and who she thought loved her back, she is persevering and still managing to go through life, not letting this bump in the road get in the way. She also comes from a loving family that always supports her, her mother even warned her of this happening one day in the future; this is where she gets the strength from. Also, though she is not very vain or self-obsessed, Betty does care about her appearance as she applies makeup towards the end of the bedroom scene.

Since Betty is typically shy, she speaks in a soft voice, even when she is talking to James, the person who broke her heart, in a mildly irritated and upset tone. The slamming of the door in James' face, and her being more closed off is a bit out of character for her, but because of what she has gone through it is understandable, and makes sense. In the voiceover, however, Betty speaks very dramatically.

Betty just does not want to get involved with James anymore because she no longer trusts him and doesn't want to experience that feeling all over again. Then again, I think she still is harboring feelings for James, especially because she was deeply in love with him before this whole mess of a situation, and coming from the fact that she seemed to be very distressed when she slammed the door in James' face. Betty may seem simple because she's from a small town and isn't much of a risk-taker, but not only is she bright, she is a complex individual. My group and I might not get to show her many layers in this brief movie opening, but we do have an understanding of who Betty is supposed to be as a round, dynamic character.
