The Supporting Characters

In my group's film opening project, For the Hope of it All, which is still undergoing the process of editing, there are two supporting characters, August and James, alongside the main character Betty, all of whom I've mentioned before.

James, who is played by Daniel, can be described physically as a Hispanic-American 17 year old boy, of around Betty's height (slightly taller than average) with dark, brown wavy hair, as well as brown eyes. Throughout the entirety of the opening, James is wearing a red sweater with white and black stripes, black jeans, and white Tommy Hilfiger shoes, we thought this would match James' personality because like Betty, James is just your typical teenager.

The props associated with James are simply the flowers that he brings to Betty's house as he begs her to talk to him about what's happened between them, the what being the fact that he cheated on her with August. Of course, the flowers represent how much James cares for Betty, or at least how much he claims to love her.

James as a person is popular at school, athletic, and generally nice but is immature and doesn't always take other people's feelings into account. This was shown as he betrayed Betty, whom he was in love with, by cheating on her over the summer. However, he also still cares for Betty because even though she broke up with him after finding out about his summer fling from a mutual friend, he still wants to try to make amends and get back together with Betty, even if it takes begging at her doorway. Also, though not as shy as Betty, James isn't much of a talker either.

In conversation, James talks very softly and sweetly to Betty, trying to oil his way back into her heart, even though he usually never spoke to her like this when they were together. On the contrary, when speaking to August, James speaks in an aggressive tone of voice, not holding anything back and talking straightforwardly because he no longer cares for her and has a grudge against her for being the reason he is not with Betty anymore.

Next, there is August, who is portrayed by our friend Ashley and has the least amount of screen time. August is also the girl who James cheated on our main character, Betty, with, being the cause of this whole dilemma.

August is an 18 year old (yes, she's older than James and Betty and a senior), Hispanic-American girl, who has medium-length black hair and is of average height. During her brief appearance in the opening, August is seen wearing a white crop top and ripped jeans as she pulls up to James in her car. This outfit fit August because basically her character is known for showing a lot of skin, mostly to get attention.

August's "props" if you will, include her only her car. Although the car that was available to use, Daniel's minivan, wasn't the most characteristic of August as we pictured a more rowdier, louder type of car for her, it definitely worked out in accomplishing what we wanted to within the film opening.

August goes to betty and James' rival school, is cheerleader there, and among being popular and confident, she is also conceited, stuck-up, and views herself as better than Betty, this is why she thought expected James to come crawling back to her after seeing that she rejected him. August is very flirty and is known to talk to a lot of boys. Even the way she approaches James, as he is walking alone, driving in her car and yelling out to him, demonstrates her confident and independence. But, James, a better person than she is, does not like August's bad traits, so of course, when he does get into her car, they start arguing because James does not want to be with August like she thought he would.
